The Weeks of Fifty Flamingos

The weeks..(yes, I said weeks)… of fifty plus flamingos has finally been delivered!  Have you ever had a job in your life that simply makes you crazy?  Something that seems so simple turns into an elephant on your chest at every turn?  I felt as fiftyflamingosthough my feet were stuck in mud sucking the life out of me.  It made me grouchy, which made Bob grouchy.  In the middle of the flock I swore I would NEVER do this kind of work again!

Then we made the delivery. The decorator loved it.  She love it so much that she said it was “perfect”…no corrections, additions or color changes.  She told me I had a “Warhol” style… and as quick as that it felt like those grueling weeks weren’t so bad after all.

So what did I learn from this experience?  (I’ve traveled this road before).  I recognize three trains of thought in the work that I do.  One….you create your own works of art exactly the way you want to on canvas or furniture and put it out there for sale through art shows, galleries or on-line. Maybe it will sell…maybe it won’t.

Two…you do commissioned work…working directly with the clients..creating works of art that enhance people’s lives and their homes.  They value your opinions and are open to possibilities.  The best thing of all is they are always full of joy when the job is complete and they always pay upon delivery.

Three…working with an interior designer.  They have their own artistic vision: therefore, you must stifle your own creativity and paint it the way they see it.  Unfortunately and fortunately…number three has been the most lucrative for me by far.  So why am I complaining?  The biggest problem is I feel a sense of loss of my own creative voice.  Yes, I painted it, but it was created by someone else’s vision.  For awhile I was teased into thinking that I would be allowed to paint it in my “style” but in my heart I knew that I should just shut up and paint it the way they wanted it in the first place.  So that’s exactly what I did.

I will probably try the decorator deal one more time.  The money is fantastic and I think I have decorators figured out.  Once you have them figured out you know what to expect and know how to feel when they tell you to change something or to just do it their way.  My dad always told me I was too emotional and as an adult I have tried to temper that and not get my feelings hurt by trivial things.  The other side of the coin is being emotional is what drives art; but there is a fine line between making great money and being a starving artist.  We’ll see what the future brings.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! …and Bring It Home…Shop Your Local Businesses for the Holidays

Wishing you all out there a very Happy Thanksgiving!  Bob and I have so very much to be thankful for this year.  We experienced a terrible summer in business this year that others have experienced far longer than we did, but the good Lord, our family, friends and especially our client friends helped to turn the tide and so we end the year on a positive note.  I am also grateful for the many business blogs, newsletters and video newsletters that helped to direct and refocus the business.  Not only were they uplifting but they helped me to keep the faith in knowing we are headed in the right direction with exciting things on the horizon for 2013.

With Black Friday on the doorstep, I would also like to mention that the Buy Small…Buy Local Day sponsored by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) is this Saturday, November 24th.  The charm of Christmas will be found in the cool little shops in your historic districts…the great bike and board shop off the beaten path…an extremely unique liquor store  (Brindley’s comes to mind) as well as any of your favorite artists (possibly Jane Crick?), photographers, artisans, authors or craftsmen.  They can provide you with very unique and sometimes one-of-a-kind holiday gifts.  The little people of business like these people are what keeps the economy chugging along in spite of what’s going on in the rest of the world. I remember as I was closing out my gallery and having the end of business sale so many people stopped in saying they had always meant to stop and never did.  If you are saying that about a local business that you drive by on a regular basis or know of one off the beaten path….stop in and spend some of your holiday dollars with them.  You won’t regret it!

From Grains of Sand True Art Shall Be…..

Cool temperatures and sunny days welcomed 70,000 people including our Florida family and twenty-five master sand sculptors to Siesta Key for the 3rd annual Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpture Competition.  Working in teams of two, each team sculpted magnificent works of art using water, the perfect kind of sand, trowels, rakes, straws and minimal kinds of carving tools that fit the team’s needs.  My family and I were delighted and amazed at the intricacy and detail these sculptors could coax out of simple sand with simple tools.

First place in the competition went to our family favorite, “Fossil Fueled” sculpted by Delayne Corbett and Craig Mutch.  My second personal favorite was “The Eating Machine,” by Rusty Croft and Chris Guinto.  I especially love the steampunk effects on the dragonfly and some of the bones of the dinosaur.  Once I got home and looked at the photos I took, I was equally impressed by a much smaller but very unique and intricate sculpture I had overlooked because of the enormity of the other sculptures. A giant hand holding a pocket watch with the cogs and wheels artistically revealed pushed the limits of sand hanging together in mid air. Cool, guys…very, very cool!

To read more about this event and view great pictures of all the sculptures and the artists, visit the Siesta Key Crystal Classic Facebook page.

The Art of Illusion

Flat street image

This past weekend our Florida family enjoyed a day of illusion at the 4th annual Sarasota Chalk Festival. Circus City, USA was the chosen theme celebrating the Sarasota/Venice circus heritage. The Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus had their winter quarters here. This weekend two hundred and fifty renowned 3D and 2D street painting artists got to use the downtown streets of Sarasota, Florida as their canvases.  The artists had 7 days to complete their project with finished viewings the following two days.  Each 3D work of art had a photo opportunity set up to get the full impact of the work with a camera.  Views from any other position was very flat looking and out of proportion.  I had seen photos on the internet of this kind of work prior to our visit but it was truly inspiring to see it in person.  I “get” it now as to how it is done and I plan to try my hand with a couple of projects in the next few weeks.

The month of November is really packed with fun artsy things to do in our area.  This coming weekend, November 8-12, Siesta Key is hosting The Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition.  Admission is $5.00 from 9-5 Thursday-Monday. There are 25 competitors sculpting their hearts out for cash and for the love of it.  Besides the Masters doing their sculpting, events include a Quicksand competition where two master sculptors have a 10 minute speed sculpting contest, demonstrations by Amazin’ Walter sharing the tricks of the trade using only sand and water and other fun events.  If you get the chance, bring a hat and some sunscreen and join in the fun!

Riding the Business Energy Wave!

Happy Halloween to all of my friends out there in Bloggerville!  This is one of my favorite times of year with the fun and color of Halloween and everything pumpkin…pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, pumpkin muffins and even a most wonderful cream liquor, Mother’s Pumpkin Spice that we discovered at Brindley’s open house!  By itself, it tastes just like a piece of liquid pumpkin pie.  Or you can give your afternoon coffee a pumpkin kick with a shot of this creamy liquor.  Simply delicious.  Another fall delight that a client shared with me is to take a can of Spanish peanuts with the red hulls on and mix in half a bag of candy corn.  Eat a hand full of this mix and you think you are eating a Babe Ruth candy bar…except easier on the teeth.  So much for the diet during the next few months!

So to finish up about the Brindley job and tell a little tale on myself, Bob and I worked hard to get all of the wine and liquor signs done before the grand re-opening.  Bob made the wine signs out of cherry plywood to match the wooden wine rack fixtures in the store.  He also cut out thin plywood bunches of grapes that I painted and then glued in place.  I then hand lettered each sign using a font that made me think of wine.  For the liquors, Bob cut out little surfboards that I base painted in Brindley’s lime green theme color and then painted a bright tropical colored stripe down the middle.  I chose a funky font and a deep sea blue for the lettering.  We made the deadline with the delivery early Friday morning.  Friday afternoon we entered the store and I looked up at a couple of our signs with the the word Bourbon on it.  They both had a red “O” on white paper taped over the “A” I had mistakenly painted…Bourban… on it.  We were in such a rush…and I am not a Bourbon drinker….that Bob and I both missed the misspelling!  I had thought about checking all of the boards to make sure I had spelled everything right, but as I am here to tell, I didn’t.  Thank goodness it is a fun place because everyone thought that it was funny…except probably for the Bourbon drinkers and me!  So friends, I will ALWAYS proofread my work from now on!  My next project for Brindley’s will be the theme park store map.  You can be sure I will check and recheck my spelling for that!

This week I took a couple of days to rest and regroup.  Bob and I were both wiped out.  Monday I had one appointment in Sarasota to look at a faux finish touch-up job for a restaurant and Thursday I am looking at another exterior commercial job with the potential of getting my painted furniture placed in their new store as well.  Tomorrow I head back to Orchid Beach to work on the sea turtle mural and discuss the canvases. Business energy is flowing and we are riding the wave!

Sea Oats and Sandcastles

I’ve put a little time and space between me and this blogging thing and I feel at peace and refreshed. For the last couple of weeks I concentrated solely on what makes me feel really, really good. Somehow I got caught up with the crowd in blogging and lost sight of the thing that makes me tick and makes us lots of money! With this fresh insight I am ready to share again.

The Brindley’s valance boards are all installed around the ceiling of the store and I’ve made all the tweaks and additions to pull everything together. Today Bob and I are working on signs to be fastened to the shelving to rise above the different types of wines. Open house is next weekend so we are under the gun to get them done. Nothing like pressure to keep those creative juices flowing!

Last week I spent several days disconnected from Brindley’s and worked in a condo up on Orchid Beach. This job was very relaxing for me.  I had the pleasure of painting where my heart lies without any constraints. The clients are away and the decorator pretty much let me do my thing.  In the foyer I painted a mural of  sea oats, beach signs, a sandcastle and seashells. The interior designer, Catherine Kerr is having a cream colored rug custom made to go with the beach theme. The rug company will carve waves and a couple of footprints into the rug for the finishing touch….how cool is that?!  The next area I painted was the guest bathroom.  The walls were so nice and smooth, unlike the textured walls I am used to here in Florida. This room is beachy also with a driftwood mirror and a mural of sea turtles and driftwood.  I took photos of the work as I always do and looking at them at home I know I need to go back to tweak the mural a little bit before I show it to the world..LOL  After that I have five canvases to do for this job. They are simple and straight forward so shouldn’t take much time to execute. Lots of fun and lots of great things happening.

Painting Paradise 2

Now that WordPress has my upgrade money I will repost my original post that I deleted thinking I would get rid of the nasty video.  I am a Christian, I have a grandson, family and friends that read my  blog.  I find it offensive that WordPress allows those kinds of videos to be attached to anyone’s blogs. That stinking video had absolutely no value to anyone as an ad. By doing this WordPress has allowed something good to be ruined with no recourse but to upgrade.  New Bloggers Beware!  It amazed me that it did not appear on my rant blog that I just posted. Did they not think a blogger would have a fit about that???  So anyway….here is my original blog….

Friday morning we delivered the first six valance boards to Brindley’s on the Island.  I’m always a little nervous just before we make a delivery especially if they’ve given me a free hand to “go crazy” like Bill did.  As the  boards were carried in one after the other, it was love at first sight. Bill, his wife, Bob and I all stood in their store surrounded by the ongoing renovations and all the painted valance boards.  I felt a tremendous rush of energy around us.  I was excited and felt as though I was actually a part of something really, really big and something really, really fun… and so did they.

To be honest, after creating the first six boards, I was feeling creatively drained and wondered if the last four big boards would be as good as the first six. With this renewed excitement, I took the weekend off and started again today.  The energy is still with me.  Ideas keep popping into my head and I keep drawing and painting. I should be able to finish the four big boards tomorrow.  After that I have about twenty 15″ x 8′ boards to complete the room.  I plan to pick one different character from each of the boards and repeat them here and there.  We’re also doing moveable pieces that can be moved around to different boards around the store for games….like find the shark’s tooth….find the lost shaker of salt….or a treasure chest with a special surprise. The picture I’ve chosen to share is a close-up of the Bubba’s Cheese Deli board.  There’s Bossy, the Bleu Cheese Cow, a friendly parrot wanting cracker’s from Brindley’s and Gertrude, the Goat perched on her mountain of goat cheese.  Check out my Brindley’s wine lizards on my Facebook page, too!  It’s just too much fun….now back to work for me so my blood pressure goes down.

WordPress Adding inappropriate video ads to get you to upgrade!

I want to apologize for the inappropriate ads that are shown at the end of my blog.  We just discovered them today with the newest post.  We feel that this is a very inappropriate ad and WordPress has made it very difficult to report it as inappropriate.  After letting you become established as a blogger they begin to put ads on your blog.  If it was an appropriate ad or one that promotes art in a good way that would be acceptable to me.  They only give you one out which is to upgrade to a paid account.  Until I find another blog spot, I will upgrade just to keep everyone from seeing this crap.  Needless to say…I AM MAD!  How many other WordPress users have had this same problem?  Please comment or repost on your blog.

Painting Paradise

Yes, I’ve been very quiet on WordPress and Facebook.  I’ve been really, really busy painting paradise these last couple of weeks.  The owner of Brindley’s on the Island loved the sample valance board so much that he asked to keep it…which I let him.  Then he told me to go crazy with fun accessories for the boards.  That could be a dangerous proposition telling an artist to go crazy, but it has been such fun.  I’ve kept Brindley’s basic logo style and color scheme going but I am adding the “Crick” touch to it.  Some of the critters are realistic and other’s are more animated doing funny things like lizards wrapping themselves around wine bottles and a goat standing on a pile of cheese.  I should get six of the boards completely done today and then Bob will spray a finish on them.  We’ll take them to Bill at Brindley’s and see what he thinks.  Keep you posted!

Building an Art Wall: It’s Done!

Today is a great day!  The staining and finishing has come to an end.  I’ve always felt uncomfortable about staining something on site and something that’s already built in, but this job was fun.  I could rely on the client’s input for color and sheen and it made the job much easier.  Lighting is such an important factor in any kind of decorating, whether it’s furniture, wall color, accessories, flooring and so on.  You have to consider outdoor light coming into the room and the ambient light in the home.  I could see the different lighting effects from trying to get a great photo of the finished work of art Art Wall.  Thank goodness for Photoshop!  I’ve tried to find a study on photographing indoor room settings but haven’t yet been successful.  If anyone out there in the photography world knows of a great blog, website or book or have tips of their own, let me know.

Back to the Art Wall…the clients had a party over the weekend and all of their guests were highly impressed.  The dimensionality of the unit and the color balance in the room are impressive and completed the family room/kitchen/breakfast nook area.  They are thrilled and so are we!

My next project is a commercial job at Brindley’s on the Island in downtown Venice, Florida.  I am starting it today and what fun this will be.  Bob cut valance boards to go around the entire front of the store.  Today I am going to give them the color base coats of the store’s logo and then the fun begins.  As it develops I will post on this project.
