The Art of Illusion

Flat street image

This past weekend our Florida family enjoyed a day of illusion at the 4th annual Sarasota Chalk Festival. Circus City, USA was the chosen theme celebrating the Sarasota/Venice circus heritage. The Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus had their winter quarters here. This weekend two hundred and fifty renowned 3D and 2D street painting artists got to use the downtown streets of Sarasota, Florida as their canvases.  The artists had 7 days to complete their project with finished viewings the following two days.  Each 3D work of art had a photo opportunity set up to get the full impact of the work with a camera.  Views from any other position was very flat looking and out of proportion.  I had seen photos on the internet of this kind of work prior to our visit but it was truly inspiring to see it in person.  I “get” it now as to how it is done and I plan to try my hand with a couple of projects in the next few weeks.

The month of November is really packed with fun artsy things to do in our area.  This coming weekend, November 8-12, Siesta Key is hosting The Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition.  Admission is $5.00 from 9-5 Thursday-Monday. There are 25 competitors sculpting their hearts out for cash and for the love of it.  Besides the Masters doing their sculpting, events include a Quicksand competition where two master sculptors have a 10 minute speed sculpting contest, demonstrations by Amazin’ Walter sharing the tricks of the trade using only sand and water and other fun events.  If you get the chance, bring a hat and some sunscreen and join in the fun!
